Everyone feels unsure what to practice next on the guitar at some point or another.

This feeling of being unsure or “lost” leads us to binge hours of content on YouTube... by online courses… packages of licks (short ideas for melodies)...

… or anything else.

But why does this happen?

There are many reasons, but one of the main reasons is this...

You may not know where you’re going.

I’ve fallen into this trap more times than I care to admit and every time it ends up the same way. I feel lost… unmotivated… and bored of my guitar playing. (The longest time I’ve ever spent feeling unmotivated is around 2 to 3 years.)

When you don’t have an end goal in mind… there’s nothing to work for. There’s no reason for your brain to want to put in the hard work. So it doesn’t.

It’s important to have something you’re aiming for that’s at least 6 months away from where you’re at.

But it can’t just be any random goal...

It has to be something that excites YOU.

What’s your reason?

Not me...

Not your friend...

Or your parents...

You.

I know I said you want to try and pick something that’s six months away. But the reality is I’ve chosen goals that I know will take me way longer than that. The important thing is that they excited me.

They made me want to pick up the guitar. They made me look forward to the future and gave me a reason to continue practicing.

So whether that’s a goal you know will take six months to hit… or something that you know will take a few years…

Make it something that you want to practice

When you do you’ll start noticing that you feel like you want to pick up the guitar and play it more.
