Every Monday I do an intense 30 minute workout.

Each session feels like torture but it’s for a good cause. Staying fit and healthy is something I value.

You might be wondering why am I talking about my Monday workout?

Because we all tell stories about ourselves in our head...

And these stories can be the difference between someone who has a LOT of fun playing and practicing…

And someone who feels down in the dumps about their playing. Someone who’s dreading picking up the guitar… because they know things just won’t sound good.

Here’s an example story I tell myself when working out…

“When Will This [Guitar] Exercise Feel Easy?!”

“When will this exercise feel easy?!”

Every workout I do feels tough for me. It feels like I’m on the edge of what my body is able to do. And sometimes it can feel like I’m broken as a person.

This story I tell myself makes working out difficult for me sometimes…

Because there’s a little part of me that wants to quit.

To give up...

To throw in the towel…

...but I know it’s good for me.

And I also know that exercise isn’t supposed to feel easy. But that’s not what my brain tells me...

It’s seeking that one workout where I feel on top of the world. Like I can “do” everything.

But a healthier story to tell myself would be this…

“The purpose of exercise is to push my body beyond its limits. To go into the comfort zone… that’s where progress takes place. It’s okay if it feels tough, that’s just a sign that you’re working at the right level for you.”

It seems funny that I have to remind myself of that…

But isn’t guitar like this too?

We all have things that we’re practicing that feel tough.

We’re waiting for the “eureka” moment where the penny drops, and everything feels easy.

“When Will This [Guitar] Exercise Feel Easy?!”

When practicing the guitar, I have some bad news. This moment will NEVER come…

And that’s okay.

The purpose of practicing is to push yourself outside of your comfort zone…

Allow yourself to become comfortable with being uncomfortable... #2022catchphrase
