When I was younger, I had a lot of ideas about what I wanted to be…

One of my biggest dreams was becoming an animator in Disney Studios in the US.

Growing up surrounded by Disney cartoons, I just thought working in it was the coolest thing ever.

And I might have even got there…

I was pretty good at art… used to get a lot of compliments from teachers & fellow students.

And yet, it was the first subject and dream that I dropped when it came to my A-levels.

That’s because I thought I couldn’t get better at art.

What I wish my mum had told me growing up…

I believed art was a talent I was born with…

So endlessly on the internet I was comparing myself to other artists at the same age (15 year olds)…

Thinking I wasn’t good enough…

I thought it wasn’t a trainable skill.

Art, just like music can seem so abstract…

And looking back, I can see how my artistic “talents” materialised.

My mum gave me a magnetic sketch pad from 1 year old… that I use to sit and draw on every day since I was a baby…

What I wish my mum had told me growing up…

She paid for private art lessons for me throughout primary school…

My family encouraged and supported me through every craft project I pursued.

But at age 15 I didn’t think about all that.

All I thought was: Nope, not good enough. Let’s work hard on things like Maths and Science where I could clearly see the effort = result output.

Maybe my life would have been different if I had known what I know now.

Now with our students, and after all the books and studying I’ve done…

I’ve realised even the most abstract skills such as music and art is developed.

You might not see it right now… but it will come.

What I wish my mum had told me growing up…

So I hope you can tell your child what I wished my mum told me…

That any skill, any abilities, and knowledge and wisdom that is found within us… no matter how abstract… comes from somewhere.

And if you work hard and learn the right way… then you can truly explore your potential.
