I couldn’t stop myself…

“Just one more video” I thought...

“Info-tainment” is addictive… and the worse part…

I didn’t know I was addicted… until I realised.

I know you might be thinking, “What the heck is “info-tainment”?”

Great question…

Info-tainment is one of the number one reasons people get stuck on the guitar.

It causes people to feel overwhelmed…

Frustrated…

Doubtful they’ll ever become good…

It makes people feel smarter…

But leaves them feeling like they still can’t play.

Allow me to explain…

We all love something “new.”

Whether it’s a new gadget, phone,

Car, watch, type of food, health craze…

Etc.

For people who feel stuck with something on guitar…

YouTube has become the place to go.

How “info-tainment” could be hurting your playing

“If I only watch another video… then I’ll find the answer I’m looking for.”

“If I learn a little more… then I’ll be able to do XYZ”

“One more video can’t hurt.”

The problem with all these videos people watch?

That “new shiny idea” almost NEVER helps people get better.

They just know more now.

It feels like we’re getting better because our brain is learning something.

Intellectually we’re getting smarter…

Practically… we’re no better off.

This is what I call “info-tainment.”

The seeking of more and more knowledge to solve a problem…

Rather than doing the real work that gets people playing how they want.

We don’t need info-tainment… we need education…

What does that mean exactly?

Well with most of the students I teach…

The biggest shifts in their playing comes from when we take what they already know…

And really learn how to use it…

Helping them to master what they know one level deeper than they currently do.

Getting them to apply things in a way they haven’t done before.

Combining skills together in a way they haven’t considered.

This is what gets people to improve.

The internet is great for many things…

It’s rich in content… some of it is outstanding…

But it can never help with truly mastering something.

There are things on the guitar that I learnt about years ago…

And I’m still finding new ways to practice today.

I don’t say this to overwhelm you…

How “info-tainment” could be hurting your playing

Guitar is something that can never be truly “mastered”…

There is no “end point”...

But we can always strengthen what we know to a deeper level..

The eventual goal is to make everything a reflex.

A reflex is when you don’t have to think about it…

You can do it on autopilot.

Just like walking… or breathing....

We don’t think about HOW to do these things…

We just DO them.

The same should happen on guitar… eventually.

People usually always know waaay more than they can do.

As skills start to turn into reflexes… dramatic changes start to happen.

It’s far superior to know less… but to do it well…

Than it is to know lots… and to do it poorly.

In the wise words of Bruce Lee (one of the greatest martial artists of all time)...

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”

How “info-tainment” could be hurting your playing

If you would like it… my advice to you today is to try this:

Spend more time on turning what you’re doing into a reflex…

And less time on info-tainment.

If you’re unsure how to do that... and you would like help.
